10/31/2004: "Happy Halloween"

I love a parade
That's right, I love a parade. Not "I love parades". 99.999%
of all parades are total crap. In an effort to reverse this trend, the
Rosenbach Museum annually sponsors the Dracula parade (But it's the Spiral
Q Puppet Theater that does all the work.)
Why does this parade rule the known universe, while nearly ever other
parade blows howler monkeys? Maybe it's because the parade celebrated a
book? Maybe it's because the costumes are all homemade? Maybe it's because
the marching band plays creepy music? I honestly can't say exactly what
makes this parade work so well that Vienna and I followed it along its
entire route, but it does.
OK, I'm off to the Day of the Dead celebration on South Street, so I'll
leave you with some pictures of the parade and a DVD rental suggestion.
Happy Halloween.

Halloween DVD rental alert!
Now this is a ghost story.
The Devil's Backbone is set during the Spanish Civil War when night
prowling ghosts were the least frightening thing a person had to deal with.
Beautiful photographed, brilliantly edited, superbly acted and wonderfully
written, this should be on everybody's top 10 Halloween films list. 666
stars. Rent or die.
